Abstract
Move to Improve: Tooth Movement and Tissue Reaction
The optimal management of complex cases involving periodontal, restorative, aesthetic, and occlusal challenges requires an interdisciplinary approach in which the integrated contribution of the various dental specialties is essential. Within this framework, orthodontics plays a central role in enhancing both the functional and aesthetic quality of the final outcome.
Orthodontic treatment can contribute to:
generating the appropriate volume of alveolar bone and gingival tissue to facilitate optimal implant placement;
harmonizing the gingival contour;
optimizing the relationship between the alveolar bone crest and the contact points to promote the preservation of the interdental papillae;
managing post-traumatic or post-extraction edentulous areas according to the restorative treatment plan.
The aim of this lecture is to examine the biological principles and clinical strategies governing the periodontal tissue response to orthodontic tooth movement in the three dimensions of space, providing a shared scientific framework that fosters effective communication and collaboration within a modern interdisciplinary dental team.
